PUNJABI AND URDU SCRIPT IN BOOKS

Collecting Resources

When beginning to learn a new language it is always a good idea to collect and build a collection of resources in that language. This would probably include such necessities as a phrasebook, grammar and dictionary first but for keeping the interest on, one needs something more entertaining and practical such as magazines, comics, newspapers, children’s fairy tales, novels, recipe books etc.

Where to Find Resources for Rare Languages?

Sometimes it can be difficult to find literature in languages other than English, Spanish and French.  If you live in the UK, Canada, US or Australia, I think, you might find it still easy to find Punjabi and Urdu books due to the large number of South Asian population that lives there. In the UK, for example, I used to get Hindi, Punjabi , Urdu and Arabic books at the outdated book sale in the library of Bradford college. They used to be sold for as little as 10 or 20 pence.

Tips on Finding Resources in India

In India it can be harder to find Punjabi or Urdu books if you live in the state other than Punjab. Some of the ways to find books you need is:

Urdu textbook

  • To visit small shops in big gurudwaras (such as Bangla Sahib in Delhi)
  • To ask your Punjabi neighbors and friends if they have some unnecessary books at home that they could give you

  • To go on a trip to Amritsar (the Golden Temple is a good destination) and buy the books there (they always have a huge market for souvenirs, books and religious items).
  •  Try the small stationary shops that sell school books in small towns of Punjab
